.com or .org what should I do!?

As many of you know, this is an entirely new concept that I'm testing. I had amazing traffic and link love on the previous blog, but one thing that is weighing heavily on my mind is whether to continue to redirect .com (what used to be theFrontSteps.com) here to .org?

My dilemna is that all the past link love form other sites and search engines that linked to .com/whatever, now get lost when looking for that content, because those links were pointed to wordpress. Now they point here and vanish.

The question then, is to put .com back to the way it was and just have it sort of sit there, and not redirect to .org. Then, .org would be an entirely separate entity.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I decided to put theFrontSteps.com back to where it was, and this social network is now officially separate and its own identity at theFrontSteps.org. I felt bad for the thousands of people searching various topics like, "Conforming Loan Limits", "Millennium Tower" etc, and ending up here and the information is not here. So....the old blog, theFrontSteps.com, this new network, theFrontSteps.org. I'll be doing most of my posting here, with the occasional post there to keep air to its lungs and a pulse in its veins.

just some thoughts... have frontsteps.com sit there, but you just don't add more content to it, and you don't allow any follow up comments (if anybody wants to post a follow up, the comment section should say "comments disabled as everything is moved over to frontsteps.org"). At top of the blog page, add a screen shot of Frontsteps.org (with all the nice photos of realtors :) ), add some marketing message about the new frontstep.org community, and put a banner on top saying "The frontsteps.com community has moved over to frontsteps.org. Join us there!", and provide a link to come to frontsteps.org. You might occasionally change the top entry of Fronsteps.com which summarizes what's been happening on Frontsteps.org, and just keep inviting the visitors to visit frontstep.org.

Anon8mizer,

Brilliant! Love your photo by the way, and thanks for the advice/thoughts.

I think you are making the right choice to keep .com proprietary to you. By completely navigating away from that and allowing anyone who wants to join the community post on .org, you'll probably end up with something as UNvaluable as Craigslist Housing Forum, on which is a series of jaded renters/owners/buyers/sellers take every opportunity to slam real estate, sf pricing, buyers who "buy in" to the hype of the market, etc.

I agree, but think some of that element of Craigslist will be necessary to give this site wheels...that is free, uncensored, and open exchange of ideas and commentary. On the old blog I tried regulating comments, but it just gets out of hand, so like I did there, over here I really don't want to moderate. We'll see how it goes.

alex, cheers to trying new things, but it may take awhile to get as much traffic as you had on the blog. I always forget anything that isn't .com though.

Kelly, if you want a tutorial in rss, I'll be happy to help you. Basically you set up a list of all the blogs/sites you want to follow and when something new is posted you see it immediately. This way you don't hveto remember to bookmark or go back to all the places you try to keep up with on the web. Hope all's well ; )
